Week 5
Week Five
Hello again
This week I am going to discuss a few ways to make money offline.
Garage Sales
Last week my neighbours told me they were having a garage sale, so I decided to join them and really clean out the house and get rid of those things we really don’t need - books I’ve already read, toys no longer played with, clothes I will never wear again (most only worn once) and jig saw puzzles which I think must have been reproducing in my cupboard!
Up early Saturday morning and the first lot of bargain hunters arrive at 6am sharp ready to find a bargain, some people go to garage sales on the hunt for items to resell - yet another way to make a few dollars. By 11am all is quiet, I have a few less boxes of stuff to pack up and $136.50 more towards the Quest than I did yesterday. The remaining items I am going to box up and donate to our local charity shop. Definitely worth the effort, I would have only been sitting around home anyway and now I have nice organised cupboards - something I’ve wanted for years!
Garage Sale Tips
- Communicate with your neighbours, let them know you are having a garage sale, they might decide to join you and share some advertising costs with you along with attracting more people.
- Advertise in your local paper and put signs up in the main areas of where you live.
- People will bargain with you so be prepared to drop your price, people seem to buy more when they get the satisfaction of winning a bargain with you.
- Prepare as much as you can the night before, bargain hunters will arrive early, but that’s the time that most garage sales do best.
- Put a price tag/label/sticker on everything, it is so much easier for your customers if they know the price, I know myself that I hold off from buying things that do not have a price on because I expect the price to be higher than it actually was.
- Remember it is a garage sale, bargain hunters will want bargains and the items you are selling are only rotting away in your cupboards waiting for their fate – a new owner or the dump, never to be seen again. Price things accordingly.
Party Plan
As with all of my ideas – Party plan may not be for everyone. However, it is a great way to make money, without having loads to invest and it can be fun for those who like to socialise.
There are many ‘party plan’ companies out there these days, it’s no longer just Tuppaware and Nutrimetics.
Here are a few that I know of (without looking anything up)
Nutrimetics – Skin Care & Make-up
Your Inspirations – Dips and sauces
LeReve – Aaromatherapy, perfumes
Candle Parties
Lingerie Parties
I’m sure if I investigated a little I would find plenty more ‘party plan’ companies.
I was recently invited to a Nutrimetics party, as usual I figured I would go along, but definitely NOT buy anything (how many of you have said this!). I walk out three hours later, had spent $149 that I shouldn’t have and now branded the title – Consultant. I am not a make-up and cosmetics type of person, so this was a big shock for me. However, against my ‘Not buy anything’ I decided to purchase some products for my face as I was nearly out of cleanser etc, for an extra $10 I could join up as a consultant, get the three products I wanted to buy plus extra products. Nutrimetics do not have the rule of “you must have so many parties per month”. You can be a “family and friends” seller.
I’m not really ‘into’ doing the party thing, but my mum has some friends who love Nutrimetics, I show them the monthly specials catalogue each month and they place a few orders. Not a huge earning so far but could be if I got right into it. You also get bonus products and consultant only specials, great for reselling or of course keeping for yourself!
Like I said, party plan is not for everyone, but some people have a real flair for it, I think the main tip is to find a product that you believe in, it really does help with your sales.
Odd Jobs
Let your friends and family know that you are willing to do some odd jobs. Of course this all depends on what you are capable of doing and what you are just not qualified to do, but it could be as simple as ironing, cleaning or gardening.
At a later date I will look into other ways to make money offline such as buying products to resell at markets, designing your own product and whatever else I can think of between now and then.

Next week – A quick re-cap of the things I have discussed so far.
Stay safe, think positive and change the way you think.
